GWINNETT CENTER EVENT TO BE BROADCAST ON TV (GWINNETT DAILY PRESS)
By Caroline Ruse
This fall’s gymnastics and figure skating event at the Arena at Gwinnett Center will be broadcast early next year on NBC.
The Hilton Skating and Gymnastics Spectacular, featuring both gold medal gymnasts and World Champion ice skaters, will take place Oct. 12. It will air in high definition on NBC on Jan. 22, 2006.
“American Idol” finalist Diana DeGarmo of Snellville will also perform as a special musical guest at the show.
Tickets for the event went on sale Monday and cost between $20 and $60.
Among the gymnasts scheduled to perform are Olympic gold medalists Carly Patterson and Paul Hamm. Last August, Patterson won the Olympic all-around gold medal, becoming the first American woman to do so since Mary Lou Retton in 1984. Hamm was the first American man in Olympic history to capture the all-around gold medal in men’s gymnastics last summer in Athens. Also scheduled to perform are Morgan Hamm, Shannon Miller and Dominique Moceanu.
Those performing on the ice will include Brian Boitano, Elvis Stojko, Yuka Sato and Michael Weiss. Boitano became a gold medalist in 1988 at Calgary’s Winter Olympic Games. Sato won the World Champion title in 1994 and became Pro World Champion in 1995. Also bringing impressive titles, Stojko has won two Olympic medals during his career and Weiss is a three-time United States Champion of his sport.
