OLYMPIAN MOCEANU PREPARING FOR SHOW (CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER)

Dominique Moceanu, a member of the U.S. women's gymnastics team that won gold in 1996, will perform June 11 at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School.
Moceanu is part of a show, which begins at 7:30 p.m., involving more than 350 students and staff from Gymnastics World in Broadview Heights. It is titled, "Gymnastics on Broadway." Moceanu has been a coach at Gymnastics World since 2002.
Moceanu, 23, recently announced her return to competition in hopes of qualifying for the 2005 U.S. Gymnastics Championships, to be held Aug. 10-13 at Indianapolis. She had announced her retirement from competitive gymnastics at the 2000 Olympic Trials because of a knee injury.
At the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta, Moceanu was 14 - the youngest member of the women's gymnastics team. The "Magnificent 7" became the first U.S. women's gymnastics team to win gold.
With increased minimum age requirements in effect, she is virtually assured of retaining her status as the youngest U.S. senior national champion (13) and youngest American gymnast to win Olympic gold.
Moceanu's first elite event in five years is scheduled to be the U.S. Classic, July 21-22 in Virginia Beach, Va.
During the summer, Moceanu plans to teach and train at Woodward (Pa.) Gymnastics Camp before returning to do the same at Gymnastics World. She will be coached by longtime boyfriend and Ohio State product Mike Canales, a former gymnast at Brecksville-Broadview Heights. Canales provided the impetus for Moceanu to relocate to Northeast Ohio three years ago.
Ron and Joan Ganim, Gymnastics World owners, said "Gymnastics on Broadway" will feature a performance by Canales and Moceanu together. The Ganims said Moceanu also will perform her new competitive floor routine.
Tickets are available at Gymnastics World, 6630 Harris Rd. Prices are $8 for adults and $5 for students (6-18). Children 5 and under are free. Call 440-526-2970.
